TAOYUAN, TAIWAN
– On November 14–15, 2025, the Taoyuan City Department of Education hosted a transformative teacher wellness retreat titled "Inner Awareness and Emotional Transformation" at Kuan-Yin Senior High School. The event brought together school principals and educators from across the district for a two-day journey into emotional intelligence and self-care.
Led by Venerable Jianhu, a neuroscientist-turned-monk with a Ph.D. in computational neural networks from UC, and guided by facilitator Chang Kuei-fen, the workshop introduced a practical framework: the "Four Pillars" (Calming, Acceptance, Detachment, Transformation) and "Eight Procedures" for emotional mastery. The Eight Procedures help realize the Four Pillars by giving detailed operational instructions. Through mindfulness practices like breath observation, walking meditation, deconstructing the nature of emotions, and ORID reflective discussions, teachers learned to navigate classroom challenges—from student defiance to parental pressures—with greater calm and clarity.
Department representative Director Tang Hui-ling emphasized the premise for the workshop: "Before we can effectively support children, teachers must first care for themselves." Participants shared powerful takeaways, including reframing criticism as a "gift" and recognizing that "emotions are not the self." In an era of AI-driven educational shifts, attendees agreed that inner stability and critical thinking remain irreplaceable assets.
The retreat concluded with educators committing to integrate mindful awareness into daily teaching, fostering not only personal resilience but also a more compassionate, responsive learning environment for Taoyuan's students.
